Heidi & Toby, Form Yoga Mats | Interview

Form

Heidi and Toby, the founders of sustainable yoga brand Form talk to Strong in Style about their inspiration, travelling and what is currently on their playlist.

What made you start Form?

We’ve been into fitness and yoga for some time, we found although there are many great brands out there, there weren’t any which had sustainability at their core – many either don’t mention their environmental impact or they add it as an afterthought. We created Form with the primary aim of having a positive impact on the environment, so all our products are carbon-negative, made of recycled rubber and are recyclable and biodegradable at end of life.

Tell us a little about Form and your brand ethos?

We are a British brand who creates high-performance, sustainable and beautiful fitness products. We launched in 2017, bringing the round yoga mat to market – the first company in Europe to do so. We’ve since also launched a rectangular mat too.

Our brand ethos is that we want to help people perform better in yoga while helping the environment. Our mats are non-slip (they get grippier as you sweat!) and all feature the Form Grid, the geometric design on all our mats, developed to improve alignment and consistency.

We promote making the world your gym; encouraging people to workout however and wherever they want: the round shape really helps people create their own space and all our mats are machine-washable so if you get them dirty outside, you can pop them in the washing-machine afterwards!

Where do you get inspiration from for the designs?

We wanted to create products that are more exciting than the plain slabs that most mats today are, so our designs are pretty unique, colourful and eye-catching. A lot of our designs are inspired by nature which is why we have designs such as tropical and leaf patterns.

What is your favourite piece from the collection?

I think the Eclipse mats are my favourite, we collaborated with Swedish artist Emma Lindström to create this design – every time I see the mat, I notice a new paint splash or detail I have not seen before. We loved working with Emma on this and will hopefully bring more artist collaborations to market in future!

Is there a go-to yoga move that always makes you feel good?

I love a good chest-opener, especially after a tough gym-workout, so I would pick either Camel pose or Dancer.

What motivates you to workout?

A good playlist – music really helps me to stay focused on the movement and helps me to take my mind off anything else.

What is on your playlist?

We actually recently launched Form Playlists on Spotify, which you can check out here. You can never really go wrong with Imagine Dragons in the gym and Bonobo in the yoga studio.

What is your favourite post-yoga meal?

I usually practice yoga first thing in the morning so I usually have breakfast afterwards – either rye bread with avocado and eggs or overnight oats.

Where is on your travel wishlist?

The big trip Toby and I are planning is a trip to Vietnam in the next year! In the meantime, we are going to do a road-trip around Scotland to explore the lochs, hills and, of course, the whisky bars!

If you hadn’t started Form what would you be doing now?

I have always wanted to spend some time living/working in another country so I would definitely be pursuing that dream, hopefully doing something that I love as much as Form!
