In honour of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness, Adidas by Stella McCartney has launched a post-mastectomy sports bra. The unique design and a first for the brand aims to cater to the needs of women who have had surgery as part of their treatment for breast cancer.
Having lost her mother Linda to breast cancer in 1998, Stella McCartney has since been an advocate for education and awareness surrounding breast cancer. Beginning in 2014, she also started a yearly Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign through her namesake label. This October the designer has partnered with Monica Harrington, a lingerie stylist and consultant who works with teens, pregnant and post-natal women, transgender and women who’ve had mastectomies or other breast surgeries.
For the launch of the Post-Mastectomy Sports Bra, Adidas by Stella McCartney teamed up with British professional boxer Michele Aboro, who is a breast cancer survivor, mother and mentor. A former WIBF super bantamweight world champion, Michele is an inspiration to all women looking to embed sports back into their lives, and represents the dynamic needs the bra was created for.
“After my surgery I felt lost. As a professional athlete, I was used to relying on my body but after my mastectomy, I started to lose belief in myself and how my body would react. When I was ready to get back into fitness, I couldn’t find a sports bra that didn’t require being pulled over my head or lacked in support. Now I wear the Post-Mastectomy Sports Bra every time I train – it is comfortable and supportive and has helped me build back my confidence to get back into the game,” Michele explains.
Created from recycled polyester to reduce plastic waste, this post-mastectomy sports bra features an extra-soft interior that protects sensitive areas, a full front zipper that makes it easy to get on and off, and a fitted construction to keep you secure. It has pockets for post-surgery prosthesis placement and is suitable for high impact sports. Available in grey or clay red both colours have Adidas by Stella McCartney’s signature snakeskin for added style.
